You just have to sit on your cabin's porch to get an armchair wildlife and bird watching experience. Two troops of howler monkeys traverse the Lodge daily and although you may not see all of the 278 species of birds that are reported to fly and nest here you will certainly see a lot of them. On the lodge trails you are likely to see many different species of birds as well as sloths and kinkajous.
The Mombacho Experience
Zip-Line CanopyTour Miravalle
The Miravalle Zip-Line Canopy Tour is a wonderful way to see the forest from the treetops. Sliding along steel wires, strung up between the treetops, you will experience a flying sensation and see a variety of animals and flora of the Mombacho Volcano Nature Reserve.
The Canopy consists of a circuit of connected wires, platforms and hanging bridges. Clients are strapped into a harness and escorted by qualified guides. Situated just 1.5 km from the Lodge the entire family can enjoy this unique adventure. With a 2 km range, 17 platforms, 11 double lines and 3 hanging bridges you will fly like an eagle!
Mombacho Lodge can make reservations for all activities on the volcano. Just let us know what you would like to do!
Hike the Lodge
On and around the Mombacho Lodge property are miles of marked, free trails (some hard, some easy) where guests can enjoy great views of Granada, Lake Colcibolca and Dirioma, marvel at the gigantic Ceiba, Chilimate and Guanacauste trees, enjoy many species of birds and butterflies and watch the troops of howler monkeys traveling through the trees above.
The Volcano and Cloud Forest
The Mombacho Volcano Nature Reserve is home to a rare cloud forest with enormous biomass, a unique elfin forest and flora and fauna endemic to the volcano. The volcano has fantastic views of Lake Nicaragua, the city of Granada and the Laguna de Apoyo.
The volcano has three hiking trails at the top: a fairly easy one (Crater trail), a moderately difficult one that circles the main crater (Tigre) and the most difficult trail (Puma). The Crater trail takes about 1.5 hours and Puma 3-4 hours depending on your fitness level. The Tigre and Puma trails require a guide that can be hired at the summit.
Hikers can walk to the top from the Lodge (about 2 hours and steep) or can ride up with one of the two tour companies on the volcano or the park truck and hike the trails once you get up there.
The Mombacho volcano has four craters. All of the craters are covered with the cloud forest. This type of forest is only found on one other spot in the Pacific, the Maderas Volcano on Ometepe.
In addition to the wide variety of trees and plants that thrive on the mountain due to the cloud forest’s humidity you can also observe howler and white face monkeys, snakes, deer, reptiles, birds and insects. There are several endemic species living on Mombacho. The Mombacho salamander is the most unique endemic species and is only found on this volcano.
Horse Trekking in the Forest
Ride horses that are well cared for and well behaved. Your guide will take you through the farms in the valley and then into forest trails as you ascend the volcano for a memorable experience. The ride terminates back at the Lodge. 24 hours notice is required.
Night-time Guided Nature Walks
Mombacho lodge offers free locally guided night tours to guests. You will see nocturnal animals and flowers that are not visible in the daytime. It's a whole different world!
