What to do at Mombacho Lodge
Wildlife Experience
You just have to sit on your cabin's porch to get an armchair wildlife and bird watching experience. Two troops of howler monkeys traverse the Lodge daily and although you may not see all of the 278 species of birds that are reported to fly and nest here you will certainly see a lot of them. On the lodge trails you are likely to see many different species of birds as well as sloths and kinkajous.
The Volcano and Cloud Forest
The Mombacho Volcano Nature Reserve is home to a rare cloud forest, a unique elfin forest and flora and fauna endemic to the volcano. The volcano has fantastic views of Lake Nicaragua, the city of Granada and the Laguna de Apoyo.
The volcano has three hiking trails at the top: a fairly easy one (Crater trail), a moderately difficult one that circles the main crater (Tigre) and the most difficult trail (Puma). The Crater trail takes about 1.5 hours and Puma 3-4 hours depending on your fitness level. The Tigre and Puma trails require a guide that can be hired at the summit.
Hikers can walk to the top from the Lodge (about 2 hours and steep) or can ride up with one of the two tour companies on the volcano or the park truck and hike the trails once you get up there. We can make arrangements for you to be picked up and delivered back close to the lodge.
In addition to the wide variety of trees and plants that thrive on the mountain due to the cloud forest’s humidity you can also observe howler and white face monkeys, snakes, deer, reptiles, birds and insects. There are several endemic species living on Mombacho.

The Canopy consists of a circuit of connected wires, platforms and hanging bridges. Clients are strapped into a harness and escorted by qualified guides. Situated just 1.5 km from the Lodge the entire family can enjoy this unique adventure. With a 2 km range, 17 platforms, 11 double lines and 3 hanging bridges you will fly like an eagle!
